October 10, 7 p.m. Fully Accessible Indoor Performance, History Center;
October 12 & 13, Noon – 3 p.m., Woodlawn Cemetery
Winona, MN: A favorite fall event, The Winona County Historical Society’s Voices From the Past takes a look into the stories and lives behind Winona County’s parks this year. Meet the people local parks are named after, who were key in establishing them, and those that made significant contributions to Winona County’s parks. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the county’s largest park, Whitewater State Park!
Voices from the Past is held at Woodlawn Cemetery on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13. Admission is taken at the gate and is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and $3 for youth 12 and under. Refreshments will also be for sale. Groups leave the gate every few minutes minutes starting at 12 p.m. with the last group heading out at 3 p.m. Live music can be enjoyed with a treat and beverage before you begin your tour. Guides lead each group through the route within beautiful and historic Woodlawn Cemetery pointing out a few interesting sites along the way. Groups stop at six sites with amazing community volunteers acting out short scenes. Actors’ names are posted at the gate each day if you are looking to see a family member or friend perform. Plan on about a two-hour experience.
If you cannot make the walk on foot, WCHS offers a fully accessible experience at the History Center. The sites will perform for a seated audience in Wanek Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 10. Admission is the same and is taken at the door. Please note that the Trester Trolley is no longer in business, and so the trolley ride option is no longer available.
As many are aware, Woodlawn Cemetery had a small tornado damage many old growth trees, monuments and the maintenance shed in the center of the cemetery on September 11. Crews are working to clear roads, assess damages, and clean up the storm damage. Woodlawn staff is confident that the cemetery will be able to be opened for the event.
