Winona, MN (April 24, 2019) – The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) in Winona, MN is opening two exhibitions in the month of May from two very different artists. While both artists draw inspiration from water, painter Maarten Platje and photographer Alec Soth use different techniques to tell their stories.
Opening on May 3 is Maarten Platje: The Early History of the U.S. Navy. This exhibition features recent paintings by Dutch marine painter Maarten Platje, showcasing historic moments in the early years of the United States Navy. His paintings are richly detailed, technically accurate, and extensively researched to provide a realistic portrayal of historic ships, battles, and events. Platje’s mastery of sailing ships and his experience sailing the waters depicted in his works, allows him to take viewers back in time to the age of tall ships. The Early Years of the U.S. Navy runs through August 18, 2019.
Minnesota artist Alec Soth is one of the most celebrated, awarded, and acclaimed photographers working today. His award-winning book and photography series, Sleeping by the Mississippi, explores the landscape of the Mississippi River and people living along its banks. This exhibition features a selection of 21 large-scale photographs from this captivating series, including images from the upper Mississippi River Valley down the Mississippi Delta. Sleeping by the Mississippi runs May 9 through September 1, 2019.
There will be a dual opening reception celebrating both exhibitions with passed hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and live music on Thursday, May 9 from 5:00-7:00 PM. The reception is free for members and students, and $10 for all others. On Thursday, May 30, from 6:00-7:00 PM, Alec Soth will lead a discussion on his exhibition, Sleeping by the Mississippi, and his evolution as an artist. This event is free thanks to the generous support of Ernest and Sally Micek in memory of W.B. “Bill” Gautch.
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization owned by its members. MMAM’s mission is to engage visitors in meaningful visual arts experiences through education and exhibitions that explore the ongoing and historic human relationship with water.
